After living and traveling throughout the Western Hemisphere I’ve realized there are many untold stories and themes to share via this blog.
My hope is that it will be informative to the readers, not a simple regurgitation of the news, but a first-hand observation of it.
I may refer back to experiences living in Argentina and Chile, though I promise to generally look forward. I leave tomorrow for Venezuela, one of the most exciting and controversial countries in the hemisphere. The presidential election that could potentially unseat 13-year incumbent Hugo Chavez is to be held October 7. The lead-up has been contentious, though the real story will unfold in the post-election period.
The country that coined “tan barato dame dos,” is one of paradox to say the least. Rich in resources, Venezuela’s natural beauty can move you to tears, as can the crime rate. With at least 60 murders per 100,000 people in the capital, it makes most of Mexico look positively utopian.
Enough armchair analysis. Time to report.
